Quake: Dawn of the Machine

Aug 16, 2026

I don't spend much time playing video games these days, but one thing that has drawn me back recently is an update to Quake, which adds a brand new chapter to the game. It's hard for me to believe, but Quake is 30 years old this year! That truly makes me feel old, as I vividly remember when it first came out. Firing up GameSpy and playing rounds of capture the flag was such good fun back in the day.

This new chapter uses some incredibly clever gameplay mechanisms, one of which transports the player forwards and backwards in time to experience the same level in both the past and future. I'm still only a few levels in (the update contains 19 new levels!), but I'm having a blast so far. It's so cool that a game this old continues to receive updates of this magnitude.
